About the NNL

The Nigeria National League is the country’s second level of club football. Since 1997 until 2001, the league has two divisions, 1A for Northern teams and 1B for the Southern ones. Currently, 43 clubs compete in the league. NNL clubs get promoted to the Nigerian Professional Football League or relegated to the Nigeria Nationwide League. History of the NNL

The second-tier league in Nigeria was the National Division 1 until it was renamed in June 2008. It was founded in 1979 then reorganized in 1991. Originally, the tournament hosted 32 clubs, but in 2012 they increased to 36. Teams from the league compete in the Nigerian FA Cup. Until 1998, the league was a single table. In the seasons between 1998 and 2011, the NNL determined the champion in a one-game playoff between the top clubs in the North and South divisions. Between 2011 and 2017, the four promoted teams competed in the NNL Super 4. In 2018, the mini-league was the Super 8. Senator Obinna Ogba is the current chairman of the league.
